Review of congruence between global crop wild relative hotspots and centres of crop origin/diversity

Abstract Crop wild relatives (CWR) are important sources of adaptive diversity for plant breeding programmes. This paper aims to investigate the extent which centres crop origin/diversity congruent with areas high CWR diversity. We established predicted potential distributions 1,425 species related 167 crops using 334,527 known distribution locations and generated a global hotspot map. was then compared proposed by Vavilov (amended Hawkes); Zeven Zhukovsky’s mega gene centres, Harlan’s non-centres domestication; domestication identified current archaeological evidence Purugganan Fuller. Greatest congruence between hotspots other concepts found concept amended Hawkes, but there remained significant differences Vavilov’s concept. concludes that all four centre reviewed have some overlap original has closest geographic coincidence hotspots. With benefit additional datasets those used Vavilov, we were able suggest amendments his concept, adding further based on in west east USA, West Africa, South-east Brazil Australia. As result this study more precise targeting landrace can be implemented future, aiding food nutritional security.
